HELP FOR PUENTE HILL, LOS ANGELES, CA by Anna Strom

My investigations have developed by means of TRANSITION, movements from one to the other. Through acts of chemical, physical, metaphysical as well as mythological DISSOLUTION the nucleus of my project has transferred/moved spatially, elementary and in form of being, both in state of matter/non-matter and in ways of use. This, what I call, constant MIGRATION in Los Angeles led me to WASTE MANAGEMENT and has culminated in an architectural/agricultural proposal.
Most garbage of the Angelon’s, the derivation of a massive consumption, actually flows into the landscape. Trash from millions of homes, collected by thousands of trucks, though hauled to nodes of sorting, distribution, reuse finally often end up as filament in canyons, by now reaching crevices to the edge. Taking the arrangement of Los Angeles situated Puente Hills landfill as spatial ground base for my proposal I am exploring existing as well as future acts of environmental TRANSFORMATION. Grown into the largest landfill in the United States, the Puente Hills, this mountain of garbage, stands as monument, embodiment of a much accelerated consumerism. At the same time it is also a valuable source of energy. Waste arrives in one state and departs in an other. Buried, the waste goes in to DIFFUSION, decomposes into Gas, a concentrate of Energy flared of and sent out as Electricity. The whole landfill operation transforms nature to fit its own purposes, deform by the route of a process. Movement below, above, in and around the landscape, cause inevitable interruption, rearrangement, and distortion. Thinking of this operative landscape in the future, in a non-active state, my task becomes how to mend, use and transform its physical traces for further alternative purposes.
Driving force of my proposal becomes REVITALIZATION. I aim to TRANSFORM the waste lands of Puente Hills into not just a source of electric energy, but also agricultural. Materialized by PURIFICATION, CULTIVATION and POLLINATION of its soil it can become both a recreational place of pleasure and an important bassinet of trees, crops and herbs. The supply of water will be crucial. Using electricity from the Gas-2 Energy facility to pump up ground water could make possible the configuration of a traversing stream across the entire site. This can provide a constant circulation from witch veins of water can trickle and distribute nourishment throughout the land. Paradoxically the power of Puente’s corroding content will also be what manifests the process of its healing at Puente. I hope its REVITALIZED hills will entice human as well as animal.
